Geocells for load support and slope protection
Geocells are three-dimensional, honeycomb-like cellular structures, typically made of high-density polyethylene, that are expanded on site and filled with granular material. The cells confine the infill, increasing the stiffness and load-spreading capacity of a relatively thin layer.

Suitable ground conditions and applications
Can be considered where…
- Access roads, working platforms and laydown areas on soft subgrades.
- Erosion protection on slopes and channels.
- Gravity retaining walls built from stacked cells.
Limitations
- Geocells do not treat deep soft layers, so long-term settlement of the soils below remains.
- Performance depends on correct infill and compaction.
- Design is product-specific.
- Exposed cells need UV-resistant material or cover.
Suitability is confirmed from the site investigation and the performance requirement.
How it works
Collapsed panels are stretched open on the prepared subgrade, connected and anchored, then filled with compacted granular material.
The cell walls confine the infill, and neighbouring cells resist each other's movement. The layer acts like a stiff mattress, spreading load over a wider area of the subgrade.
Design inputs
- Subgrade strength (e.g. CBR).
- Traffic or equipment loads.
- Geocell product properties.
- Infill specification.
- Layer thickness and cover.
Trial and calibration
- Trial section to confirm installation and compaction.
- Plate load test on the finished layer.
Execution controls
- Subgrade preparation and levels.
- Panel expansion, connection and anchoring.
- Infill placement and compaction.
- Cover thickness.
- Installation records.
Verification and acceptance
Design intent, production control and acceptance verification are kept separate, so it is always clear what was required, what was done and what was proven.
What is required
Bearing or deflection criteria agreed with the consultant.
What was done
Records of installation, infill and compaction.
What was proven
Plate load tests, infill density tests and level checks.

Common questions
What are geocells used for?
Load support on soft subgrades, erosion protection on slopes and channels, and gravity retaining structures.
What is the difference between a geocell and a geogrid?
A geocell is three-dimensional: it confines the infill inside cells. A geogrid is a flat grid that interlocks with the aggregate. They are sometimes used together.
Do geocells solve deep soft ground?
No. Geocells stiffen a layer near the surface. Deep soft layers need a different treatment.
